Mabel MacKenzie

LYONS BROOK/CARIBOU – Mabel Jean MacKenzie, 92, of the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou and formerly of Lyons Brook and Caribou, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 27, 2014, in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Caribou River, she was a daughter of the late William and Jessie (Sutherland) MacLeod.
Mabel was a very kind-hearted and giving soul who always had a smile for everyone. She will also be remembered as a great cook, working at various jobs prior to her employment with Northumberland Ferries for 31 years, retiring at the age of 71.
She is survived by daughters, Kathryn Shaw, Waterside; Marilyn MacKenzie (Paul Doucette), Lyons Brook; granddaughter, Debbie Weatherbie; grandsons: Ted, Edwin, Kevin, Reggie; great-grandchildren: Abby, Randy, Danielle, Jessica, Gerry, Nathan, Gracen, Brittany, Brayden, Rory, Darion; great-great-grandchild, Liam; brother, Aubrey (Elaine) MacLeod; sister-in-law, Jean Battist; as well as nieces and nephews. Mabel will also be sadly missed by her four-legged fur friend, Rollie.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Georgie; brothers, Allie and twin Roy; grandson, Gerry; great-granddaughter, Kathleen; first husband, Edwin Patterson; former husband, Roland MacKenzie; and two sons in infancy.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, with Jacquie Ross officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will be at a later date in Waterside Cemetery.
Donations in Mabel’s memory may be made to the Waterside Cemetery, Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, or a charity of choice.
