STRONACH, Ethel “Iola” – 96 of Halifax and formerly of Kingston passed away, Monday, February 03, 2014 in Northwood Centre, Halifax. Born in North Kingston, she was a daughter of the late Elwood and Matilda (Roach) Downie. In early years, Iola was employed at the Red & White grocery store, Kingston as well as Steven’s Flower Shop and the Sundry Shop. She was a lifelong member of the Kingston United Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. Iola was also a founding member of the Kingston & District Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and had been an active member of the Canadian Red Cross. She is survived by daughters Gail Thomas (Jack McParland) Perth, Ont. and Sharon (Frank) McGill, Halifax, grandchildren Kimberly and Andrew, great grandchildren Christopher, Ruth and Jack and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Murray (1995); sisters, Ora, Edna, Myrtle, Helen, Mildred, Alice and brother, Oakley. Visitation was held Wednesday February 5, 2014, in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. Funeral service was held Thursday, February 6, 2014, in Kingston United Baptist Church, Kingston, NS, Rev. Nelson Metcalfe officiated. Interment will be in the North Kingston Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Kingston United Baptist Church, Kingston Fire Department or charity of choice. Family flowers only.
