Joan Peek

Joan Maxine Peek, age 79, of Durham, Pictou County, passed away on February 5, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Granville Station, Annapolis, she was a daughter of the late Leslie Lee Charlton and Norma Dorothy (Wright) Charlton.
Prior to moving to Hants County, Joan was employed for a number of years with the Nova Scotia Provincial Government Finance Department in Halifax. Joan was truly an outdoors person. She loved to hunt and fish with Bob and spent many years by his side doing just that. But Joan’s passion was always being a successful bird dog trainer and her prized dogs. People came from all parts of the province to have Joan train their dogs. She loved taking her dogs to the field trials and how proud of them she was, win or lose. She also took great pleasure in tending to her huge vegetable garden. Joan was known for having strong opinions on most topics and well apt at defending them when necessary. She was an amazing, strong, independent, wilful woman.
Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert “Bob”; sister, Carolyn Eileen Hartlen; brothers-in-law: Harold Bernard Hartlen, Ernie Peek and Denis Mullins.
She is survived by sisters-in-law: Barbara Mullins, Marie Peek, Doris Royale and Nancy (Rene) Gagne; brother-in-law, Phillip (Kathy) Peek; nieces and nephews: Robert (Jean) Hartlen; Michael (Donna) Hartlen; also Sonya, Sean, Nadine, Michelle, Todd, Troy, Mark, Virginia, Patty, Phillip and Amber.
A sincere thank you to Dr. Randy Burrill, Dr. Yazan Ghanem and Dr. Gerry Farrell for their caring and gentle manner while treating Joan. Thank you to all who came to see Joan over these past seven months, she enjoyed each visit. A special thank you to Glenn and Glenda Lake for their support and caring attention to Joan for so long, and especially Glenn, who looked after her every need.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11th in McLaren Funeral Home, 246 Faulkland St., Pictou, with Rev. Barb Fotheringham officiating. A reception will follow. Interment will be held at a later date.
