Donald Arthur Poynter

Passed on: February 8th, 2014

Donald Arthur Poynter of St. John's, Newfoundland (born in St. Lawrence NL) died unexpectedly at his home in St. John's on 8 February 2014. He was 63. He is the son of the late Florence M. Poynter (Etchegary) and Donald A. Poynter Sr. Donald is survived by his daughter Alison (and her mother Gail French); sister Adele (John McNicholas), brothers Thomas (Stephanie) and Robert (Kass), and pre-deceased by his sister Barbara. He also leaves his Uncle Gus and Aunt Kay Etchegary; cousins: Gemma and Albert Giovannini, Kay, Glenn and Grant Etchegary, and Susan and Robert Lohf; nephews and nieces: Jenna, Jolene, James, Megan, Ryan, Alexander, Patrick, Kate, Henry, Annabel, Zachary, Donald, Jack, Paul and Jim; and his friends and acquaintances in St. John's and St. Lawrence. Donald's life was notable by its diversity - both of interests and careers. He was equally at home discussing the radial engines on a Douglas DC-7, the latest NASCAR stats, where to plant rhododendrons, and why the Basques came to Saint Pierre. As a child, he could identify which boat was coming into St. Lawrence harbour by the sound of its engine. As an adult he never met an inquisitive visitor he didn't regale. He made films with MUN Extension; collected bad debts for HFC; operated offshore radio for Husky Oil; flew all kinds of fixed-wing planes and helicopters; ran Holland Nurseries; and managed Quality Control for a software company. He had a long and rewarding association with the Progress Club and Rotary Club of St. John's. His devotion to Alison was exemplary and he celebrated her accomplishments with unbridled joy. His nieces and nephews will miss the smiles he puts on their faces. The adults will miss a friend and a brother with an incredible memory, a quick wit, and a heart of gold. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday February 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Progress Club, P.O. Box 5515, St. John's, NL A1C 5W4. To send a message of condolence or to sign the memorial guest book please visit www.carnells.com.
