Florence CHISHOLM

CHISHOLM, Florence J.
Pictou

CHISHOLM, Florence Janet -95, Pictou. It is with deep and heartfelt sadness that the family of Florence Janet (MacNeil) Chisholm announces her passing on February 11th at Ivy's Terrace Nursing Home, Trenton where she resided for the past 14 months. She was 4 days shy of her 96th birthday. Born in Big Marsh, Antigonish Co. on February 15, 1918, Florence was the daughter of the late Lauchlin and Annie Catherine (MacDonald) MacNeil. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In 1935 Florence married the love of her life, Daniel William Chisholm and together they spent the next 64 years raising 15 children and enjoying grandchildren, great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren. Family was what she cherished most in her life and she loved each one of us unconditionally. Life was not always kind to Florence as she faced many hardships including the deaths of six of her children. She has stated that losing a child is the hardest cross to bear but she always remained stoic, never complained and kept her beautiful smile until the end. Being a devout Catholic, Florence relied on her faith to get her through these very difficult times. To her family she was truly a hero and we will always rely on her for strength and courage. Florence was an extraordinary housekeeper and could write a book on how to reuse and recycle in the home. She was also a great cook and with so many mouths to feed she learned to work magic with very little. Her Sunday dinners were always the best. She was also well known for and took great pride in knitting beautiful socks, gloves and mittens. Her handiwork was enjoyed by all her family and many friends and acquaintances’. She also enjoyed flower gardening and when she could no longer garden outdoors, she enjoyed her potted plants. Surviving Florence are sons, Joe (Chris),Fredericton; Bernard and Harold (Brenda), Pictou; daughters, Jean Thompson, New Glasgow; Mary (George) Hamilton, Ottawa; Janet Trites, Waterside; Joan (Elwood) Rankin, Meadowville; Eileen, Trenton; and Barbara (Gary) Fraser, Pictou. She is also survived by 37 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Besides her parents Florence was predeceased by her husband, Dan (1999); sons, Donnie (1990), Billy (2003), Charlie (1999) and John (1972); daughters, Rose (1992) and Bernadette (1996) and granddaughter Donna Lynn (2004). She was also predeceased by her sister, Isabel; and brother, John MacIsaac (WWII) as well as sons-in-law, Norman Thompson, Peter Trites and George Murray. Her remains will rest in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Sunday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou on Monday at 11:00AM. Spring burial will be in the parish cemetery.
