Emma Roena Holmes (Scott) 92, Stellarton. It is with heartfelt sadness the family announce her passing at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow on Friday, February 14, 2014, after battling Alzheimer’s Disease for the past few years.
Roena was born on February 28, 1921 in Middle Melford, Guysborough County to parents Joseph and Eunice (England) Scott. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In 1943 she married Thomas Alexander Holmes and resided in Mulgrave until 1960, when she moved her family to Stellarton where Tom continued to work for the CNR.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Tom in 2000 after 57 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by brothers, Leonard, Samuel, Gardner, and sisters, Stella Shutt, Alexa Dorr, and Viola (Laurie) Carter.
She is survived by daughters, Jean (Norm) Ferguson, Nina (Bill) Herman, both of Stellarton; Deborah (David) Duffett of Hammonds Plains; as well as sisters-in-law, Geraldine Scott, Halifax and Eleanor Holmes, Mulgrave and several nieces and nephews
She is also survived by grandchildren, Norm (Tracey) Ferguson, Westville; Karen (John) Laundon, Colchester, Vermont, USA; Julie (Sean) Ferguson-Sullivan, Vancouver, BC; Vanessa (Randy) MacLeod, MacPhersons Mills; Olivia (Darren) Stroud, Stellarton; Alicia (Keith) Herman-Beaton, Mabou, Cape Breton; Scott and Jacob Duffett of Halifax Along with great-grandchildren , Moriah, Eric, Lauren, and Mathew MacLeod, Jordyn and Chloe Ferguson, Charlotte, Kate and Samuel Stroud, Waylon and Piper Laundon.
Roena was a lady who lived a full and inspiring life, rich in generosity, humour, and a strong love for her family. Her happiest days were spent with Tom during summer months in retirement creating wonderful memories with family and friends at the old family home “on the hill” by the Strait of Canso.
Roena was a past-member of Faith Chapter, Order of The Eastern Star, Mulgrave, St. James Anglican Church, Melford, St. Andrews Anglican Church, Mulgrave, and Christ Church, Stellarton.
Family members wish to extend a special thank you to Dr. J. Forbes and Staff for their wonderful care and kindness shown Roena during her stay at Glen Haven Manor. Also, to Dr. Grant Kirk, her family physician for many years.
Visitation will be 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Mulgrave and Area Resting Place, Mulgrave. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at St. James Anglican Church, Middle Melford, Guysborough County, with Rev. Evelyn Knorr and Rev. Peter MacRae officiating. Internment to follow at a later date at Christ Anglican Church Cemetery, Stellarton. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
