Jean Florence Penny, 79, of St. Peter's, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Oban Seaview on Nov. 14, 1934.
Jean was predeceased by her beloved father, Hugh John MacPhail and her precious mother, Catherine May MacPhail. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, who died at birth; loving sisters, Eva-Belle Gosby, Jessie Sampson (MacPhail), Betty LeBlanc (McLeod), as well as, Thelma and Shirley MacPhail, who died at birth; and her brothers, Calvin Kent, Winston and Melvin.
Jean is survived by her sons, Bruce (Chaudhari), Lake Echo, NS, Norman (Coreen), Goose Bay, Nfld. and Shawn (Carolyn), Beaverbank, N.S.; daughters, Darlene, Baie Comeau, Que., Linda (Dave) Benvie, Sydney and Karen (Gerald) Mombourquette, Truro, N.S.; sisters, Joan (the late Ernest) Fougere and Sharon (Angus) MacDonald and brothers, Wayne (Nancy), Wendell (Shirley), John (Peggy) and Sherman (Cheryl). Precious to Jean were her grandchildren, Ryan Alfred and Brianna Penny, children of Norman and Coreen Penny and Shelbie Mombourquette, daughter of Karen and Gerald Mombourquette. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Anna MacPhail and will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews, including those in London, Ont. John and Rose, Ken and Judi, Glenn and Susan and Ashley and Kalynn; and many grandnieces and grandnephews, especially, Hugh Jocksey, whom she adored.
Everyone in the community of St. Peters recognizes Jean’s life-long volunteer work, as well as her commitment to the Legion for 15 years and the Terry Fox Foundation for 30 years. She was honored in the Nova Scotia Legislature for her dedication to the “Marathon of Hope”. Many will also remember Jean for 21 years of devotion caring for the elderly at the Cameron Nursing Home. A very kind and compassionate person, Jean enjoyed entertaining visitors and keeping in touch with family and friends by telephone was a daily ritual.
Thank you to the Richmond County Home Services for the care and loving friendship shown to Jean in her later years.
Visitation will take place at the River Bourgeois Funeral Home on Friday from 2-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Peter’s United Church on Saturday 2 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Riverview Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Jean’s wishes were that memorials would be made to St. Peter’s United Church or the Terry Fox Foundation.
