BOWER, Captain Maurice Lewis, Jordan Bay, Shelburne County, passed away peacefully with family by his side at Valley Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the age of 94. Born June 9, 1919 in Newcastle, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Reginald Winburn and Laura Mae (Hatt) Bower. He lived in Jordan Bay until 2005 when he moved to Kentville to live with his youngest daughter and her family. Maurice was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Prenetta (Locke); his son, Delbert Frederick Bower, and a granddaughter Tanya Lynn Nickerson. He is survived by five of his children; Shirley (Carl) Bower, Coldbrook; Irene Smith, Dartmouth; Gloria (Blair Wentzell) Lohnes, Bridgewater; Geraldine (Gary) Dedrick, Shelburne; Sheila (Louie) Jacquard, Kentville; his daughter-in-law, Eleanor (Smith) Bower, Bridgewater; grand-children, Christopher, Karen, Ashleigh, Kim, Reby, Blair, Brandi, Cody, Amanda, Brittany, Audrey, Tanya, Laura, Laurent and Lianna; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Laura (Bower) Acker, Shelburne, and Sylvie (Bower) Peterson, Shelburne. He was also predeceased by brothers, Alvin, George, Richard, Wilbert, and Bruce. Maurice was a Veteran of WWII and a fisherman all of his working life. He was an avid hunter and loved playing card games with his grandchildren and others (especially if he was winning). Maurice had a passion for playing bingo over the years and spent many nights bowling, playing darts, and curling in his younger years. He was a dedicated Blue Jays fan and was thrilled to attend his first and only MLB games in Toronto at 86 years of age with two sons-in-law and a grandson. Maurice lived a very active life, visiting all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their homes regularly until December 2013. A funeral service was held Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne, with Rev. Cindy Dunnett officiating. Visitation was Friday, February 21, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to the Jordan Bay Cemetery or charity of choice. Interment was held in Jordan Bay cemetery following the reception which was held at Huskilson’s Funeral home after the service.
