Marcel POIRIER

PICTOU – Marcel Paul Poirier, December 1, 1964 – February 17, 2014, died suddenly at his home in Southern Ontario at the age of 49.
It is with deep sorrow that his children, Madeline and Evan, their mother Leslie (Acton, Ontario) and extended family in Nova Scotia acknowledge his passing.
Marcel was born and raised in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He was a graduate of Pictou Academy, St. Francis Xavier University and TUNS (Technical University of Nova Scotia). As an electrical engineer he worked mainly in the field of nuclear energy and he was respected as a thorough and conscious contributor. Although he spent most of his working life in Southern Ontario, he was deeply connected to Pictou County through a large network of extended family and friends. Marcel (or Flub as he was affectionately known) was the youngest brother of the large Poirier clan.
He leaves behind 16 brothers and sisters: brothers, Keith, Maurice, Andrew, Camille and Aurelle Poirier; sisters, Beverly Underwood, Sylvia Chapman, Marcia Bowen, Tina Poirier, Alicia Rose, Cindy Carter, Nona MacDonald, Francine Topple, Nova (Annette) Poirier, Colette Poirier, Maria Poirier Buck; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
Marcel had a large personality. He made everyone feel connected, young and old. His family and friends at home cherished the times he would spend with them on summer vacations and special family gatherings. When Marcel was around you knew you were loved. Many special memories were made with him on his brothers’ fishing boats or at the cottages. Family bread bake-offs provided more special memories. The Bread King he will always be although he never officially won the title. Marcel’s passing leaves a great hole in the fabric of his family and community.
Marcel was predeceased by his mother, Amelia Poirier (Hemmings); father, Benoit Poirier; and brother, Joseph (Joey) Poirier.
Memorial gatherings to honour Marcel’s life will be taking place both in Ontario and Nova Scotia. In Pictou, a public visitation will take place in McLaren Funeral Home from 2-5 p.m. on February 24th. The family then invites members of the community to join them at the Pictou Fire Hall at 7 p.m. for a sharing of stories, prayer and song to help send him on his way.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to a trust fund for his children, Madeline and Evan, would be appreciated. Contributions can be made on line at www.mackinnonfamilyfuneralhome.com or directly to McLaren Funeral Home at www.mclarenfuneralhome.ca
