POWELL, (Pugh) Everett Spencer, 79, of Bridgewater and Brier Island, died Friday Feb.28th, 2014 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater surrounded by family. Born to Murray and Ethel (Everett) Pugh April 11, 1934 in Westport, NS. His formative years were spent at Western Light on Brier Island where his father was Assistant Lighthouse Keeper. He attended Westport Academy and was admitted to Provincial Normal College in 1951, as the youngest student ever to begin studies there. Upon graduation in 1952, he began his teaching career at Port Maitland, Yarmouth County. Continuing his education was very important to him and he earned two Bachelor degrees as well as a Master of Education. His Master of Education thesis included pioneer research in the assessment of the SACU testing program, and he was invited to present his results to registrars of all Atlantic Provinces universities. Throughout the years from 1952 to 1980, he taught in various schools throughout Yarmouth, Digby and Kings Counties, retiring as Supervisor of Schools for Kings County and Greenwood Air Force Base in 1980 to return to his first love, fishing and the sea. In 1983 he returned to teaching, and was vice-principal of both Maple Grove Education Centre and Yarmouth Junior High School as well as Principal of Islands Consolidated School in Freeport, N.S. Taught boat building techniques by his father, he built and refurbished boats all his life, including punts, double enders and boats up to 34 feet through his business Brier Island Boatbuilding. He also taught the art of boat building through numerous adult education courses. At the time of his death, he was still working daily on his boat. He was owner of Powell Marine Surveys for ten years, doing boat surveying work throughout the Atlantic Provinces. The sea and the boats on them were very special to him. He is survived by his wife, Bernice (Porter) Powell, children : Dorothy (Roger) Outhouse, Freeport, N.S.; Carol (Mark) Titus, Dartmouth, N.S.; Everett (Christine) Powell, Blue Rocks, Lunenburg County; Lewis (Rita) Powell, Grande Prairie, Alberta; ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as former wife, Karen Powell of Victoria, B.C., mother of Everett and Lewis. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Shirley Farnsworth of Maine. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Service was held at the Westport Church of Christ, Westport, N.S. Wednesday, March 5th at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Douglas Porter officiating. Interment in Woodside Cemetery, Westport. Donations in memory can be made to Sheltering Helpless Animals in Distress (S.H.A.I.D.) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Family flowers only.
