J Dorothy Renouf
September 20, 1913 – February 28, 2014

Much loved by all who knew her, J Dorothy Renouf slipped away on the morning of February 28, 2014 in her 101st year. Predeceased by her beloved husband Harold, and her siblings Louise and John, Dorothy is survived by her four children Janet, Ann Petley-Jones, Robert (Barbara) and Susan (Scott Thompson), her grandchildren Anne, Phillip (Catherine), Elizabeth (Chris Snide), Evan Harold, Iain, Matthew, Connor and Roisin and her great-grandson William. She is also remembered by cousin Gretchen Smith who was devoted to her in her last years, and by cousin Lynn Ross.
Janet Dorothy Munro was born on September 20, 1913 in Stellarton, NS, to Dolina and John Thomas Munro. She was proudly the descendent of Scots who arrived on the HMS Hector in 1773, and of Richard Cunningham, the first clerk of Joseph Howe’s government. She was an amazing oral genealogist and could rattle off the relationships and interconnections of many generations of forebears, complete with their gifts and foibles, so that we who listened to her, could believe those people were in the next room, not the last century. Family was immensely important to Dorothy and she loved us all fiercely.
The family moved to Halifax when Dorothy was 13 where she finished school. She later worked as a bookkeeper until her marriage to Harold Renouf in 1942. Harold and Dorothy embarked on family life, soon returning to New Glasgow where Harold built his successful career. This career would eventually take them back to Halifax and then on to Ottawa and Montreal after the children were grown. Upon retirement, they returned to Halifax and subsequently spent many happy years dividing their time among Halifax, Sarasota and Pictou Landing.
Dorothy had a gift for living. She was infectiously joyous with a razor-sharp wit, and anything could be an excuse for an occasion. She loved picnics in all weather, music, reading, crossword puzzles, autumn colours and swimming. For many years, she would take her first swim at Pictou Landing as the bergs were just leaving and her last swim in the lido at the Waegwoltic Club as the staff was trying to close it down. And she loved chocolate. There was not much that couldn’t be cured with a little chocolate.
But Dorothy’s biggest love was saved for us, the family and friends of her long life. And we loved her. We will miss her.
A special thanks goes out to the staff at Drummond Hall and to Dr. Couture who were so kind and caring to her in these last few years.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 6036 Coburg Rd., Halifax on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Symphony Nova Scotia, Box 218, 5657 Spring Garden Rd., Halifax, NS, B3H 3R4, or online through CanadaHelps.org
