Betty Creelman

CREELMAN (Phillips), Betty Louise – 67, Bass River, passed away Thursday evening, March 6, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a long and determined battle with cancer. Born May 24, 1946, in Truro, she was a daughter of Florence (Sutherland) Phillips, Townsview Estates, Truro, and the late George Phillips. Betty attended school in Upper Economy and later at West Colchester High School in Bass River. During her school years, she also took several years of school by correspondence in order to help out at home. After high school, she attended Nova Scotia Teacher’s College and then taught for several years in Great Village and Bass River before staying home to raise her children. Her greatest enjoyments in life were her family and friends but she also enjoyed gardening, sewing and going for walks. An active church worker, she taught Sunday school at the Nazarene church in her younger years and then at Riverside United Church in Bass River, where she served as an elder and also with Fireside Unit of UCW where she served as President at various times. Along with her mother, Betty is survived by her husband, John; sons, Matthew (Mayu), Halifax; Mark (Lisa), Porters Lake; grandchildren, Luke, Great Village; Emma, Daniel and William, Halifax; brothers, Kevin “George” Phillips, Surrey, British Columbia; Arthur (Arlene) Phillips, Winnipeg, Manitoba; sisters, Roberta Higgins, Lorraine Phillips, Victoria, British Columbia; Lila Phillips (Mike Kilburn), Elaine (Terry) Hudson, Truro; half-sister, Bernice Sutherland, Truro; nephews, Jordan Phillips, Winnipeg; nieces, Meighan Phillips, Winnipeg; Darlene Vance, Bass River; Courtney Radcliffe, Brighton, England; Luke’s mother, Linda (Dawson), Great Village. The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Daniel Rayson and his nurse, Helen, Dr. Darrell White and Dr. Geoff Porter at the QEII for their care of Betty during her illness. Also, the family wishes to express their thanks to the doctors and nurses at Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their wonderful care over the last eight years. Special thanks are extended to Sue Gibbons, Dr. Cortney Smith and all the nurses at Palliative Care and the homecare workers and nurses of VON for their faithful service over several years; Sheryl, Lynn, Margie and others, you are all tops in Betty’s book. Finally, a thank you to neighbours and friends for all your kind deeds during Betty’s illness; your kindness will always be remembered. Betty’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Riverside United Church, 5577 Highway 2, Bass River, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2014, Reverend Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Reception will follow in MacFarlane Hall. Spring interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory to Riverside United Church or a charity of choice are welcomed.
