Clyde R. Murray

The family of Clyde R. Murray, 83, of Springhill is saddened to announce his passing, albeit peaceful, on Tuesday, February 25th at Springhill All Saints Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Springhill, Clyde was the son of A. Clyde and Alvina M. (Wilson) Murray.
Like many of his generation, he went to work at the coal mines at an early age; first on the surface and eventually underground, and grew to love the brotherhood of a miner’s life where, in addition to digging coal, he was a trained Dragerman routinely assisting in underground rescue work. Though briefly trapped and badly hurt, he was one of the last remaining survivors of the famed 1958 “bump” that claimed the lives of 75 miners. After the mines closed he served a successful twenty-five year career with Corrections Canada in both the Dorchester and Springhill penitentiaries, retiring in 1990. When not at work, Clyde enjoyed more than forty-five family summers at the cottage in West Pugwash. The spring and fall were reserved for fishing and hunting at the camp on beautiful Fountain Lake.
Clyde was married to Margaret B. Hale (1932-2010), to whom he was devoted though the span of their sixty-year marriage. Together they raised five children: Brenda (Dan) Pirrie, Pugwash, David (Barbara), Rodney, Drew (Ellen), Springhill, and Ian (Robyn), Dartmouth. The family mourned the loss of their son and brother, Clyde Jr. in the summer of 2002. Clyde and Margie were blessed with ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. As an only child, Clyde often marveled at the size of the Clan that he and Margie had produced. Besides his children and grandchildren, Clyde is survived, and will be sorely missed by his special sister-in-law, Audrey Atkinson (Roland Reid) of Chance Harbour, and other extended family members.
The family will be forever grateful for the concern, tenderness, and compassion extended to Clyde over the past eighteen months by the extensive team of medical and support professionals from Home Healthcare, the VON, and hospitals who provided for his care with the grace of angels. There are many individuals for whom we are thankful, but the family would like to acknowledge Cindy Oickle, Drs Karivelil and Short, and the 2nd Floor staff at All Saints Hospital for their unwavering support and guidance.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A.H. Brown Funeral Service, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill (902-597-2361). The family will announce arrangements for a memorial service to be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the All Saints Community Health Care Foundation (902-597-2634) or the GOVRC are encouraged.
