Vera Margaret Smith, 96, Amherst, N.S., passed away peacefully in the Shannex Northumberland Hall on February 28, 2014 with family at her side. Born in Thomson Station, N.S., she was the daughter of the late William and Tressie (Watson) Thompson. Vera is survived by her daughter Norma Joyce Hurley, grandchildren Denise (George) Dorn, Alan (Clara) and Arnold (Jackie) Hurley, seven great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and special family friend, Bev Legere. Vera was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, the late Wilson A. Smith. Vera was also predeceased by her sister, Leota, brother, Ellsworth, and son-in-law, Daniel.
Arrangements have been entrusted to W Allen Funeral Home, 60 Water Street, Oxford. Family and friends were invited to a time of visitation on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from noon until 2 pm at the funeral home, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm Rev. Gary MacDougall officiating . Burial will take place in the Thomson Cemetery in the spring. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Vera may do so to the Bethany United Church or a charity of choice.
