ALLEN, Bernard “Bernie” Franklyn – age 81, Yarmouth, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born September 23, 1932 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Elsie Surette and a stepson of the late Arthur Surette. Bernie gave 20 years of service to the Royal Canadian Army, all of which was served at CFB Gagetown, after which he worked as a provincial correctional officer for 13 years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 22, Bear River, as well as a member of Saint Ambrose Cathedral Parish, Yarmouth. He was an avid hunter and he loved playing cards every week with the boys at Rockville Carriers. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Georgina A. (Trahan) Allen, as well as their children, Sharon Smart, Liverpool; Russell (Darlene) Allen and Brenda (Phillippe) Surette, both of Arcadia; grandchildren, Traci (Albert) Young, Scott Carson, both of Liverpool; Denise (Edmund) Surette, Sackville; Sarah Allen, Halifax; Kyle (Tiffany) Surette, Springhill; Katelynn (TJ) Phillips, Saskatoon; great grandchildren, Marshal, Tonya, Gavin, Owen, Ciara, Alexander, Aiden and Dante, as well as several nieces and nephews. Aside from his mother and stepfather, he was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Surette. Visitation took place on Sunday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m., with prayers at 8 p.m., both at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held on Monday, March 10 at 10 a.m. from St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth, Father Gerald David officiated. Interment followed at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth. Memorial donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
