It is with heavy hearts we, his family, announce the passing of Francis McDonald of 69 South St., Glace Bay at the Glace Bay Hospital the March 17, 2014. Francis was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (McCormick) McDonald.
Francis worked 45 years in the coal mine. After his retirement he volunteered his time at the miner's forum and the Bayplex until his stroke in 2008. He lived at Taigh Na Mara for the last 1 1/2 years, where he was well taking care of by the staff.
He is survived by his son, Tom of Oxford Mills, Ont. and daughter, Eileen of Cambridge, Ont.; grandchildren, Colin of Edmonton, Alta.; Christopher, Darryl and Bruce; Deborah and Jennifer of Ontario and daughter-in-law, Marion Young, who was with him at the time of his passing; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Francis was the loving husband of Mary (Chaudar) McDonald who passed away in 2009 after 67 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife he was predeceased by his son, Colin; brothers, Archie and Roy; sisters, Mary Clarke, Catherine Kennedy, Margaritte Locke and Teresa; a sister in infancy; daughter-in-law, Carol McDonald; and good friend, Jack McDonald. Francis was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Church Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Norman McPhee officiating.
