Gustie Haystead (nee Flaata)

Passed on: March 24th, 2014

Gustie Haystead (nee Flaata), age 89, peacefully passed away at Moose Jaw Union Hospital on March 24, 2014. Lovingly remembered by her Ontario family, sister Pearlie Frank, son Gary Haystead, nephews Allan (Cynthia) and Steven (Susan-Jane) Frank and their daughter Madelaine. Gustie is predeceased by father Sten and mother Christine (Bakken) Flaata. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Chateau St. Michael’s, the Emergency and ICU staff at the hospital, the Bristow family and Gustie’s special friend Lynn Orton. Gustie will be missed by her extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews here and in Norway and members of the Scandinavian Club of which she had been a most active member for many years. Her sense of optimism, humour and sense of caring will always be remembered. Born July 18, 1924, the spirited young Gustie lived the prairie girl life on the farm outside of Kincaid. She attended Pinto View School and Kincaid High School. Gustie moved to Ontario and served her country in the RCAF (WD) from 1943-1946. In 1947 she married Harry Haystead and had one son, Gary who now resides near Toronto. In the 1960’s she lived in Ottawa, close to her namesake, Aunt Gustie (Sten’s sister). Around 1966 the Kincaid farm was sold and Sten and Christine moved to Moose Jaw. Gustie soon followed and lived with and cared for her parents up until Sten’s passing in 1992. She continued to live at the Grafton Avenue home until 2010 when she took up residence at Chateau St. Michael’s. The tough life of growing up on the prairie and living through the dirty thirties made her resilient and her love of people kept her young at heart. She will truly be missed. A Visitation will take place at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Monday March 31, 2014 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, with the Funeral Service to follow at 1:30 pm. Reverend Doug Shepherd will conduct the service. Royal Canadian Legion Rites will be conducted by Chuck MacMillan. Interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery. In living memory of Gustie, a memorial planting will be made by W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
