DAVIES, BARBARA ANN - Fredericton, N.B. - Our mother, Barbara Ann Davies, 86, passed away March 28, 2014 in the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, N.B. She loved to read books, tend
a garden, catch a fish, and cook a great meal for her family. Ann was born in Saint John, N.B. and grew up in St. Johnʼs, Nfld. She often recalled family holidays in a canvas tent on the Salmonier River, and loved to tell the story of how, when a young girl, she hooked a salmon, broke her rod, and pulled the fish in with her bare hands and what
was left of the fishing line. " Ann finished nurseʼs training in 1948 and for several years flew as an airline stewardess with TCA up and down the Atlantic seacoast. Boston was her favourite stopover. She met Jim Davies in Moncton, and they married on October 30, 1952. They
settled in Riverview, then for six years lived in Newcastle. In 1967 they returned to Riverview and opened The Book Mark, Monctonʼs first independent bookstore. Ann became known as “the book lady” for her love and and knowledge of books, and her quiet customer skills.
" After Jim died, Ann lived on her own for 28 years and enjoyed camping in Cape Breton, Gos Morne, Kouchibouguac and Forillion Parks with her family. She regularly drove to Fundy National Park where she would climb down the 104 wooden steps to spend the afternoon on Point Wolfe Beach, walk the Caribou Plain Trail or have a smoke beside Wolfe Lake. She made three trips to British Columbia and learned to love the mountains. In 2010 she moved to Fredericton, and on her apartmentʼs back patio enjoyed growing scarlet runner beans, tomatoes, and tuberous begonias. " She will be greatly missed by her daughters Lynn Davies (Dave Macfarlane) of Fredericton and Susan Davies (Maurizio Oss-Cech) of Golden, B.C.; two brothers Max Tomlinson (Monique) of Montreal, Que. and Art Tomlinson of St. Johnʼs, Nfld.; grandchildren Sally Melanson (Brian LeBlanc) of Moncton, Derek Melanson of Golden,
B.C., Josie McConnell of Fredericton, Patrick McConnell of Vancouver Island, and great grandson Lennox LeBlanc. Ann was pre-deceased by her parents Helen (Barnes) and Arthur Tomlinson; her sister, Marion (Ellis); her son, John Allen.
"At Annʼs request, there will be no visitation or service. Many thanks to Dr. Gowan, Dr. Karol, and the many skillful nurses of the DECH for their compassion, knowledge, and support through such a difficult time. In Annʼs memory, a donation to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Palliative Care Unit would be appreciated and can be made through Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Road, Moncton, (506) 852-3530. Or you could plant a tree for her. " We remember her prolific vegetable and flower gardens, raspberry patch, and peonies - Ann had two green thumbs. She especially loved trees and enjoyed sitting in the shade of the three chestnuts, two blue spruce, oak, and linden trees she had planted in her back yard in Riverview. Mum, thanks for being such a quiet, loving, wise, and feisty presence in our lives - weʼll keep planting trees for you. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Road, Moncton (506) 852-3530.
