It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Francis ‘Eric’ Brophy at home on Friday, March 28, 2014.
Born in Whitney Pier, Eric was the son of the late Frank and Belle (Ivany) Brophy.
Eric joined the Air Force at the age of 17 and retired from the forces after 33 years of service. After retiring he returned with his family to live in the Pier. He went to work with the Corp of Commissionaires for a few years and being interested in local current affairs he became a committee member of JAG and fought to get studies done on the health of people in the Pier. Eric and Peggy attended all of the public meetings and reporters from far and wide requested interviews with him.
Recently he was saddened by the closing of the Veteran Affairs offices. He stood
with the other veterans and civilians who protested. He wrote letters to the editor
and to members of parliament protesting the closing of these offices.
Eric was a member of Holy Redeemer parish. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his leadership and kindness.
Eric is survived by his son, Darren (Tonya Briand); daughter, Cecilia (Gene) Stanford; granddaughters, Katelin (Bruno), Kristin, Kira Stanford, Kassidy Harris and great-granddaughter, Mya. He is also survived by a sister, Eleanor; brothers, Albert (Sally), Brian (Jean) and Peggy's children, Sherry, Wendy, Scott, Trevor, Brent, Tracey, and their families.
Besides his parents, Eric was predeceased by his first wife, Lorraine (Campbell), second wife, Peggy (French Burt) and a brother, Douglas.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served following the mass at Pier Community Funeral Home, reception area. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Eric believed in helping others; in lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Redeemer Building Fund, Whitney Pier Boys Club or charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
