With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Garland Russell Ashford, 59, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Gladys (Blagdon) Ashford and the late Russell Ernest Ashford.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, and was a Past Grand Master of the Fulton Orange Lodge. Garland was employed as assistant chief steward with Marine Atlantic for 35 years. Garland loved spending time with his family and friends, joking and teasing them and having a good laugh and he will be sadly missed.
Besides his mother Gladys, North Sydney, he is survived by his wife, Johanna (Kendall) Ashford; stepchildren, Tina (Lloyd) Keagan, Pembroke, Ont., Kim Buffett (Paul Lacroix), Ottawa, James Buffett (Kathy Teichroeb), Ottawa; his grandchildren, Amanda and Peter Keagan, Kody Buffett-Wilson, Ange-Lyne and Josianne Patenaude and Gauge Buffett and one great-grandchild Kendall Keagan. Also surviving are his two brothers, Jack (Darlene) Ashford and Donnie (Donna) Ashford, both of North Sydney; and two sisters, Pauline (Richard) Carroll, Florence, and Karen Ashford Clarke, Edmonton, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Teresa Terrace at the Northside Community Guest Home, Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Palliative Care , Dr. John Ritter and Cathy MacMillan and the many kind gestures offered to Johanna and the family, especially Sue Lewis for the many drives to and from the guest home.
Visitation for Garland will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church 3M Campaign or a charity of choice.
