“Well Respected Mi’kmaq Spiritual Elder”

Knockwood, Noel Raymond – 81- Millbrook

It is with heavy hearts the family would like to announce the passing of respected Mi'kmaq Elder Noel Raymond Knockwood, age 81, in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with his loving family and friends by his side.

Noel Raymond Knockwood born July 18, 1932, son of the late John Stephen Knockwood and Teresa Eunice Simon, died Thursday, April 10, 2014.

He is survived by Mary Susan Knockwood, mother of his six children, Vera (Pat) Gloade, Raymond, Pius (Stephanie), Edna (Ross) Singer, Gabriel (Mary), Basil (Tammy), Anna Nibby Woods, Christine Jacqueline Nibby as well as Amsodaqun Julien, Noel's companion, Iretia Cox, her children, Allan, Gerry and Keith.

Noel is also survived by his grandchildren, Samantha, Gregory, Marilyn, Nathan, Rayvon, Kayla, Lyndon, Sage, Brent, Clarrisa, Reed, Blade, Ross Jr, Hannah, Olivia, Shelley, Adrian, Russell, Isabella and Rolan; great-grandchildren, Christian, Nicholas, Silipai, Thane and Easton.

Noel is predeceased by step-brothers, Stephen and Benjamin and step-sister, Lucy; brothers, Henry and Joseph. Surviving are sisters, Rose and Isabelle, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Noel's many lifetime achievements include, Shubenacadie Residential School survivor; Sergeant at Arms, Korean war veteran serving 413 days in combat and Keptin Grand Council. In 2002, Noel received a National Aboriginal Achievement Award for culture, heritage and spirituality. He received many other awards.

Visitation Saturday, April 12 beginning at 2 pm at the residence of his son, Gabriel on 130 Fern Drive, Millbrook First Nation until Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 9:00 am at which time Mr. Knockwood will be transferred to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro where a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 Tribute will take place at 10:45 am followed by Noel’s spiritual journey.
