George Hanna Khoury

George Hanna Khoury, Amherst, 91, died April 12, 2014, at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
George was born December 22, 1922, in Kilhat, El Koura, Lebanon, to Hanni and Father Hanna Khoury. He came to Canada in 1955 and returned to Lebanon to marry Salwa (Merhij) in 1962. They made their home in Amherst where they raised two children.
George operated George’s Tailor Shop on Church Street for 30 years, serving the public and customers of Mansour’s Men’s Wear, and was affectionately known as George the Tailor. He was an active member of Christ Church, the Amherst Curling Club and the Lion’s Club. He enjoyed a daily walk until he was 89. George was known for his kind and generous spirit and his pleasant nature. In his younger years he played poker and attended the horse races. Later he took up bowling with his wife.
He was a great cook and winemaker, and an enthusiastic and accomplished gardener. Each spring – including this one – he started tomatoes from seed in his porch that would later become the highlight of family members’ gardens. He grew grapes as a young man in Lebanon, a hobby he continued in Canada. He proudly shared cuttings from his arbor with friends and family.
George is survived by his wife Salwa, son Danny, Amherst; daughter Andrea and husband, Gilles Despres, Tidnish, N.S.; step-grandsons, Mathieu, Montreal, and Michel, Dieppe, N.B. He is also survived by nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and California; a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews in Lebanon. He was the last member of his immediate family having been predeceased by his brother Michel and sisters, Matille and Adele, Lebanon; and sisters, Victoria Joseph and Alexandra Mansour, Amherst.
Arrangements are by Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906). There is no visitation. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church, Monday April 21 at 11 a.m. with Archdeacon Glenn Eason and The Reverend David Myles officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christ Church, Amherst, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, or a charity of your choice.
