Passed peacefully away after a courageous battle with cancer on April 21, 2014 in the presence of his loving family, Michael Timothy O'Brien age 78 years. Predeceased by his parents John and Ann O'Brien; daughter Beverly. Leaving to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 54 years Anne (nee Mullaly); daughter Michele (Len Coughlan); sons: Mike (Shelley) and Chris (Adele); grandchildren: Zac, Matty, Ben, Alex, Nicolas, and Julie; many close cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He grew up in St. John's and graduated from St. Patrick's Hall School in 1951 with honours. He completed an honours pre-engineering diploma at Memorial University and went on to graduate from Nova Scotia Tech in 1957 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Honours). After graduation, Mike spent seven years at United Towns Electric Company before joining the College of Trades and Technology in 1963; he was appointed vice-president in 1971 where he served for 21 years. He served as acting president for seven months before retirement in 1992. Mike served as President of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1974-75 and received an Award of Merit and a Life Membership from the Association in 1995. He was designated a Fellow of Engineers Canada in 2008. Mike was also an active volunteer in the community during his retirement. Mike will be resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 7pm-9pm and on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Pius X Church on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 9:30am. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations can be made in Mike's memory to Dr H Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, or a charity of one's choice.
