John Everard Terry

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: April 23rd, 2014

On April 23, 2014, John Everard Terry, aged 89, joined his dearly departed in Heaven: wife, Janet Sue Terry, and her sister, Norman Jean Ferrari; twin brother, Paul Randall Terry, and his wife, Sheila; sister, Ann MacLean, and her husband, Kevin; parents, John and Maisy Terry; and infant nephew, Paul Joseph Terry.
Dad loved his family above all else and was extremely proud of his children, Jon, Brian (Wendy), Yvonne, and Jenny (Blaine). He was a dear and devoted uncle to: Paula (John), Mark (Yuniarti), Susan (Kelly), Christopher (Ruth) and Michael Terry; Jeff (Lucia), Katherine (Danny), and Marie (Lorne) MacLean; and Angela Ferrari. He adored each and every one of his grandchildren, Carrie, David, Emily, Chrissy, Matthew, Maddy, and Chuck. He also truly loved his friends and will be sadly missed by his best friend, Ray Martheleur.
Dad was devoted to his country, his community, his church, and his work. He always spoke highly of colleagues from University College of Cape Breton, Sydney Tar Ponds Clean-Up Inc., Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology, and Dominion Coal Company Limited. He enjoyed many lasting friendships through professional and charitable organizations including the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, Mining Society of Nova Scotia, Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Military Engineers Association of Canada, Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, Rotary, United Way, and Red Cross. He proudly served his adopted country with the 45th Field Engineers Squadron and 3 Militia Group, Sydney. After his retirement Dad happily spent his spare time reading at St. Theresa’s parish and volunteering at Ashby Elementary School’s breakfast program.
The family thanks Dr. Gregory Myatt, whom Dad held in the highest esteem as both a doctor and a friend; we recognize this special bond of mutual admiration and respect. We also thank the staff, volunteers, and families of the An Cala palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital; we are eternally grateful. We also thank Father Doug Murphy for giving Dad the Sacrament of the Sick, and Dr. Ann Francis D’Intino for her very special visit and kind words.
Dad was always happiest in the company of friends and family exchanging stories and smiling and laughing, so please join us at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. and a funeral mass at St. Theresa’s Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please take a friend out for lunch or coffee-Dad would really love that. If you would like to also make a donation in his memory, please consider the Palliative Care Unit or Cape Breton Cancer Centre of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Dad always considered himself a ‘lucky guy’, even at the worst of times, and we are all very lucky to have had him in our lives.
