Maurice Currie

Born In: New Waterford

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: April 24th, 2014

Following our long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease, I said goodbye to my beloved husband, Maurice Currie, in Sydney on April 24, 2014. We had 20 years together.
He was the son of the late Maurice R. Currie and Selina (Gouthro) Currie of New Waterford, Cape Breton Island.
After graduating Mount Carmel High School, Maurice attended Xavier Junior College, Sydney. For a short time, he served in the Canadian Army as lieutenant in The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. He then pursed advanced studies and was appointed Associate of the Ontario College of Art (Advertising Illustration), Toronto, in 1964. In 1969, he graduated from the University of Guelph, Ontario, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He received a Diploma in Art Education, 1972 and a Teacher’s Certificate, Special-Class 8, in 1976 from the Department of Education, Province of Nova Scotia. He taught art at Sydney Mines Memorial High School for 25 years, retiring because of illness in 1996.
He was a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and the local Parkinson’s support group.
Maurice liked to travel abroad when he was well and continued to enjoy travelling around Cape Breton Island while his health permitted. He lived for many years at Grove’s Point on Boularderie Island, where he built his first home in the 70s and, aided by his keen eye for detail, perspective, and design, he supervised the construction of our new home in 1996. He loved Boularderie Island and our gorgeous view of the Bras d’Or Lake. He loved music, too, especially The Three Tenors and Foster and Allen. His beautiful voice often burst into slightly off-key song, causing us many good laughs. Fond as he was of rural living, he thanked God for supermarkets so he wouldn’t have to garden. He liked to supervise that, too, though His warmth, charm, sense of humour, and love brightened my world.
Sometimes life gives us a gift. Maurice was mine.
He is survived by me (his wife) Charlotte Musial, Sydney; daughter Patricia (Fred Pegley), Halifax; son Shawn, Sydney Mines; brother Eldridge, Burnaby, BC. Also surviving are step son Martin Steele (Julie Desmarais) and honourary granddaughter, Crystal-Rose Steele, Ottawa; brothers-in-law Chuck, Fred, Michael, and Kevin Musial; sisters-in-law Marilyn (Musial) Jones and Mary Lou Musial and by his mother-in-law Mary Musial.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Charlie Musial, and lifelong best friend, Verner Connors.
Support for Parkinson Society Canada or donations to any Cape Breton charity would be deeply appreciated.
Friends and family may gather to celebrate Maurice life on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m., April 29, 2014 at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.twcurry.com.
