STELLARTON – It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my husband, John Edward James of Stellarton on April 29th, 2014 at home.
Johnnie was born in Thorburn, the oldest child of Albert and Julia (Ermenc) James and one of 13 children.
As a kid he worked on the family farm and in later years in the coal mines and also the Eastern Car Plant in Trenton.
In 1960 he began his own business J.E. James Restaurants Ltd. from where he retired some 40 years later in the year 2000.
Up until his death he and his wife delivered flyers for the Halifax Chronicle Herald in the Guysborough area.
He was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Stellarton and also of the Pictou County dart league. He loved hockey, darts and was very fond of animals. Music was a big part of his life and for many years he played his guitar and sang for many house parties and social functions along with his long time friend Andy Dupuisse. In his later years he enjoyed a very simple life style, sitting in the sun and just talking about the good old days.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years the former Colleen (Campbell); his children: Debbie James (John Coll), Ottawa; Tim, Ottawa and John (Jan), Stellarton; three grandchildren: Alisha and Eric, Stellarton and Sandy, Ottawa. Also surviving are six sisters: Dorothy (Joe) Morrison, Thorburn; Minnie Sartoris, Thorburn; Annie (Billy) Swallow, Thorburn; Rose MacEachern, Stellarton; Mary (Vince) Harned, New Brunswick; Bertha (Jim) Simpson, Calgary; two brothers, Herbie, Thorburn and Larry, Stellarton; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; sisters Helen (Chalmers) Stewart, Julia (Lawson) Sartoris; brothers Alex and Andrew
The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home New Glasgow. Funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
