Douglas Charles Siegel, age 85, of Middle Ohio, Shelburne County passed away in Roseway Hospital on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Born in Marcus, Iowa on February 12, 1929, he was the son of the late Fred and Emma (Specht) Siegel of Marcus, Iowa. Doug was a heavy equipment operator all his life starting with his service in the United States Navy having served with the MCB-6 Seabees. It was during this time that he arrived in Shelburne when his construction battalion came to build the former CFS Shelburne Naval Base. After marrying his wife, the late Geraldine (MacKay) of Middle Ohio, the two settled in East Hartford, Connecticut where their four children were born. Eventually the family moved to Shelburne and Doug continued his career in heavy equipment operation until his retirement. He is survived by sons, Peter (Carol), Ted (Cindy); daughters, Mindy (Burt), Patty (Steven), grandchildren, Mark, Colin, April, Peggy, Chrissie, Megan, Jesse and Brendan; great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Quinn, Brooke, Ryan, Jacob, Lexie, and Kyden; sister Peggy Hansen, nephews Jim and Chris Siegel, Chuck Hansen, nieces Linda Kahler and Donna Mertz, sister-in-law Charlotte Siegel. He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine, brother Donald Siegel, brother-in-law Ray Hansen, nephew David Siegel. His body has been donated to Dalhousie University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Middle Ohio Union Church. Memorial donations may be made to Middle Ohio Union Church or Middle and Upper Ohio Fire Department.
