BOWLAND, KARL MICHAEL - The passing of Karl Michael Bowland occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 15, 1939 in St. Martins, NB, he was the son of the late George and Rita (Layden) Bowland. Karl is survived by his wife, Barbara (O’Neill) of 52 years; two sons, Michael of Edmonton, AB and Scott (Terri) of Fredericton, NB; he was a loving grandfather to Emery and Calder; sisters, Betty (Clayton) Peacock of Hampton, NB and Paulette (Stanley) Durnnian of Long Point Rd., NB; brothers, James of Saint John, NB, Paul of Hampton, NB, Donald (Heather) of Bakersfield, California, Ronald of Surrey, BC, Vernon of Hampton, NB, Robert (Lorraine) of Saint John, NB; sister-in-law, Shirley (Bill) Munro of Saint John, NB; brother-in-law, Bill (Felicity) O’Neill of Passekeag, NB; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special aunts, Winnie Bannister and Sister Virginia Layden; uncles, Father Donald Layden and Kenneth Layden. Karl attended St. Vincents Boys School then finished his education in Hampton. He worked in various jobs which took him to Fredericton with Burma Propane, then to Sackville, NS with Fundy Chemical Plant and Fawcett Foundry. In 1969 he transferred to Fredericton to work at Gamble Fuels and Provincial Artisans until his retirement. Karl was a lifetime member of the Lions International and an active Fredericton Lion for 50 yeas. Serving in many capacities in the club, he was known as the “Batter Man” at the Frex Dippy Dog Stand. He was a recipient of the distinguished Melvin Jones Award and volunteered with the weekly Blind Bowling, Wheels to Meals and the Red Cross Blood Donor clinics. Karl always enjoyed selling tickets for various projects and travelling was a great passion of his, as long as he was behind the wheel. He enjoyed fishing in many brooks, especially around Goshen. Our family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and staff who provided exceptional care to Karl over the past months, also a special thank you to his long time friend Charlie O’Leary who was always there for him.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB, on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 2 to 3 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 3 pm at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel with Father Donald Layden officiating. Interment will take place at Oceanview Cemetery in Saint John, NB at a later date.
