Jean GUNN

PICTOU ­ – Margaret Jean Gunn, of Faulkland Street, Pictou, passed away peacefully at the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou on May 6, 2014, a month away from her 90th birthday.
Born June 6, 1924 in Trenton, she was the eldest child of Josephine (Cochrane) Brown and John Roderick Brown.
Jean attended Normal College in Truro and taught in Pictou County for several years prior to joining the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1946, taking the religious name St. John Francis. She was assigned to Antigonish, where she taught at Morrison School. She studied at St. F. X. University, where she obtained her B.Sc. in Home Economics in 1957 and later a Master of Home Economics in the U.S. Jean left the convent in 1965 and returned to Nova Scotia, where she became Supervisor of Home Economics, a job she held until her marriage to Anderson “Andy” Gunn in 1976. She became a faithful member of the Clan Gunn, and served as Secretary for many years.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers, Roderick, Lawrence; brother-in-law, Ernest Jordan and sister-in-law, Catherine Brown.
She is survived by her sister, Florence Jordan, Pictou; brothers, Donald (Helen), Bailey’s Brook; Joseph (June), Pictou; sister-in-law, Jeanette Brown, Truro; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Special thank you to Karen Wilson and “the girls” for the loving care of Jean over the years, to the staff of the Maritime Oddfellows Home and to Mary Beth Moriarity for all her care and support.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral Mass will take place 11 a.m. Friday from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Stella Maris Church or the Pictou United Church.
