Arthur 'Shep' Doucette

Born In: New Aberdeen Glace Bay
Born: October 27th, 1930

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Arthur Fabian ‘Shep’ Doucette at home on Friday, May 9, 2014.
Born Oct. 27, 1930 in New Aberdeen, Glace Bay, Shep was the youngest of 10 children of the late William Charles and Ada (nee Mason) Doucette. He was a coal miner in No. 20 Colliery until 1968 and was an early member of the Men of the Deeps in 1966. As a young man and throughout his life he was an avid baseball player (1946, Antonians, pitcher) and coached many teams (Tower Road, Cambridge). Shep and his late wife Abigail retired back to their roots in Glace Bay in 1990 and he re-engaged his passion for singing by joining the choirs at St. Paul’s Presbyterian and St. Mary’s Anglican Churches. He was called upon by many community members to solo at funerals and also a member of Coal Town Chorus.
Shep is survived by his sister, Adeline and his son, Fabian ‘Eric’ and his partner, Dan; as well as five stepchildren, Mary, Gary, Denise, Jennifer and David.
Besides his parents, Shep was predeceased by his loving wife, Abigail (Yates); brothers, Willy Albert and Thomas ‘Tommy’ and sisters, Lorraine, Evelyn ’Evy’, Sarah ‘Sally’, Martha and Edna Mae.
The family are extremely grateful to Dr. Kevin McNeil, the 3W staff at the Glace Bay General Hospital, VON Canada and Cape Breton Continuing Care, who collectively contributed to Shep’s desire to remain at home.
In honour of Shep’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Patten Funeral Home in Glace Bay. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 8 Marconi St., Glace Bay. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Maple Street. All family and friends are invited to a luncheon at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, following the graveside service
In lieu of flowers, donations in Shep’s name may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican andor St. Paul’s Presbyterian Churches in Glace Bay.
