Jorome Kopperud

Passed on: May 8th, 2014

Kopperud: Jerome Oliver, March 27, 1944 - May 8, 2014. Jerome passed away suddenly at his residence in Swift Current, SK at the age of 70. He was born on the Bradley farm south of Cadillac, SK, the 3rd child of Julian and Grace Kopperud. He was baptized and confirmed at South Immanval Lutheran Church. Joe attended school in Cadillac, worked at the Co-op and the Alberta oilfield. Joe's dream was to be a farmer! In the 1960's he purchased his father's land. He custom combined and baled feed for his neighbours, and raised Charolaise cattle. With diligence and frugality he was able to purchase more land, and build a new house on the home place. Jerome's interests included hunting, trapping and many sports, especially hockey. He loved to dance, sing and often coaxed a tune from the guitar, banjo, harmonica and Jew's harp. Joe had keen interest in family history, pioneer life and the "wild west". He had an incredible memory for facts, dates and names, and with his sense of humour could tell great stories. Joe took many correspondence courses relating to the trades. He enjoyed studying the Bible. In his early 20's, Joe developed a mental illness related to an auto accident, and he struggled for many years to continue farming. In 1993, he retired and moved into Cadillac. In 2009, Joe moved to Swift Current to be closer to his extended family, health care and senior's housing. Jerome was predeceased by his parents, Grace (1988) and Julian (1990) Kopperud; nephews, Gary Kopperud (1957) and Jeff Kopperud (2011); plus many cousins, and all of his aunts and uncles. Joe is survived by his brother, Donald (Lucille) Kopperud, and their children Roxanne, Greg, Susan, JoAnne and Carolyn; sister, Beryl (Cliff) Moe, and their children Patricia, Doug, Ken, Steven and Barry; sister, Sharon (Ken) Peters, and their children Micheal and Gwyneth; sister, Karen (Eugene) Sawchyn, and their children Tim and Julie; plus numerous great nieces and nephews and several cousins. Joe was laid to rest beside his parents on May 13, 2014 in Cadillac, SK. The graveside service was officiated by Pastor Linda Hall. Pallbearers were his nieces and nephews. The family sincerely appreciates the support of the community and health care services through - out his life. A man with a kind heart and gentle spirit, may he rest in peace.
