HOUGHTON, Shirley Maxine - age 83, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2014, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Montreal, Quebec, on December 31, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Neil and Mabel (Carter) Domminey. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful Mother, surrounded by the love of her family. Mom was a very special woman, touching everyone who met her with her outgoing nature, her zest for life and her fabulous sense of humour. When she turned 80, she decided to learn how to use a computer and loved nothing better than to send and receive emails from her children and grandchildren. Mom was a very humble woman and for anyone who came to her door, there was always a welcome and something to eat. It was nothing to sit down to supper and find an extra person or two sharing our meal. She was the best cook ever and she knew every single favorite of each of her children and grandchildren. Mom was happiest in the kitchen baking up the next treat for the lucky child who was to visit. She had the cure for everything - anytime you needed to know what to take for an ailment or how to fix something in the house, or what to plant in the garden, Mom had the answer. She could have written a book with all of the knowledge she had. Mom loved to read and she was never, ever without a book or two on the go. We will love and miss our Momsey forever. She is survived by her son, Richard (Faye) Houghton; daughters, Linda (Lester) Cleveland, Cathy (Harold) MacDonald, Elayne Zwicker (Dave Sherman), Julie (Ron) Salsman, Brenda (Arthur) Acker, Donna Houghton (Scott Langille), Kristine (Peter) Curtis, 16 grandchildren, Michelle (Doug), Micheal, Lisa, Tara (Patrick), Nicole (Steve), Heather (Anthony), Eleanor (Taylor), Jessica, Anissha, Kurt, Mitchell (Laura), Melissa, Nikita (Carl), Sebastian, Kristeen (Tim), Brad, 22 great-grandchildren, Justin, Ashley, Cody, Daniel, Benjamin, Willow, Kendra, Kylie, Brody, Addison, Dante, Gio, Mischa, Jackson, Tyler, Brent, Kaitlen, Candace, Parker, Noah, Jack, Gabriel and two great-great grandchildren, Leah and Jack. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, daughter, Janet and two sons in infancy; brother, Doug Sarty. There was no visitation by request. Her graveside service took place at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 14, in the Berwick Cemetery, Main St., Berwick. Rev. Garnet Parker officiated and reception followed at the home of Richard and Faye Houghton, Coldbrook. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to any charity.
