George Porter

PORTER, GEORGE ROSS - January 23, 1915 - May 23, 2014 - George Ross Porter died May 23, 2014 at Riverside Court in Woodstock, NB at the age of 99 after a brief illness. Born in Meductic, NB to the late Wilds and Inez (Durling) Porter, he is survived by one daughter Alma (Lewis) Wright of Riceville, and their children Kathy Anderson (Tony), Shelley Hawkes (Tony) and Mark Wright; two sons, George Porter of Fredericton and his children Kevin Porter (Christa), Karen Gunn (David). David Porter (Cathy) of Saint John, and their children, Ben Porter (Christina), Andrew Porter (Natalie), Katherine Powell (Graham); thirteen great-grandchildren; one Brother Paul Porter (Thelma) and two sisters Velma Guerrier of Bath and Clara Stewart (Arthur) of Marysville; nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his wife of 58 years Jean (Schriver), one brother Clayton Porter and daughter-in-law Faith Porter. George was a World War II veteran having trained with the Search Light Battery and the 63rd Artillery Battery. He sailed for England with the Argyle Sutherland Highlanders just in time for the invasion of France. They made their way across Europe and eventually into Holland. His story entitled “The Versatile Soldier” is recorded in the book We will Remember Them. Returning home from the war, George worked as a Canadian Immigration superintendent in Grand Falls and Woodstock. He was a member of the Anavets and the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a member of the Meductic United Baptist church and was a founding member of the Golden Glows Seniors Club in Meductic as well. George was great outdoors enthusiast and loved to hunt and fish and could be found boiling down some sap for maple syrup in the spring of the year. He has a green thumb and caring for his gardens and orchards was an enjoyable past time. A wonderful storyteller, he kept his grandchildren entertained for hours. This special gift and love of poetry has been passed down to many of his heirs. You would often find George among friends, enjoying a game of cards, cribbage or pool. George retired after 35 years with Canadian Immigration and spent many winters travelling to warmer climes such as St. Augustine, Florida. He was a wonderful kind and generous father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be sorely missed and forever loved. Psalms 37:23 –The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, a verse that suits George well.
