MERRILL, ELWOOD JOHN - The passing of Elwood John Merrill, husband of Maxine (Dorcas) Merrill of Charter’s Settlement, NB occurred on Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, NB. Born in Greenhill, NB on January 22, 1936, Elwood was a son of the late Gilbert and Elsie (Bishop) Merrill. He owned and operated his own business but also enjoyed woodworking, snowmobiling and other outdoor recreational activities. Elwood attended the New Maryland United Church and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4 in Fredericton. In addition to his loving wife of 55 years, Elwood is survived by his sons, Boyd (Tracy) Merrill of St. John’s, NF and Hal (Tracey) Merrill of Charter’s Settlement, NB; grandchildren, Jason (Eva) and his mother Pam Jeffrey, Morgan, Ian and K-Leigh; sisters, Ila Chedore of Fredericton, NB and Ella Mae Ward of Marysville, NB; brothers, Walter Merrill of Fredericton, NB and Willard (Kathy) Merrill of Charter’s Settlement, NB; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Elwood was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Hilda Merrill; brothers-in-law, Reginald Chedore and Duncan Ward.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held from York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 2 pm with Rev. Kelly Burke officiating and Pastor Larry Matthews assisting. A reception will follow the service in the Fireside Room. Interment will be in the New Maryland United Church Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation.
