Roy Garfield Saunders

Roy Garfield Saunders of Cook's Harbour was born on Jan. 12, 1948 to George and Clara Saunders. He had five brothers, two sisters and six half-sisters. On Nov. 3, 1967, he married Priscilla Hedderson, and together they had two children, Rowena and Jason. He had four grandchildren, Jillian, Joshua, Nickolas and Lillie and one great-grandchild Chloe. He fished in a long liner for a few years before going to Goose Bay for work. Only there for a couple years before coming back to Cook's Harbour to do what he loved most…fishing! Roy loved to set potatoes in the summer and he mostly enjoyed digging them in the fall when he could get the chance to cook up a feed of fish, potatoes and scrunchions and then to end his meal with a good cup of tea and a cigarette. His grandchildren were his pride and joy! He loved to watch them play and hear their stories. If he could get them up to something that they shouldn't be at, he would. He loved every minute he spent with them. In the last eight years as a quadriplegic, he spent time at Curtis Memorial Hospital and the John M. Gray Centre in St. Anthony. To him the staff was like an extended family. Roy had lots of patience. He never complained about anything, even after he got sick. He loved and adored his kids, grand kids and all his family. He especially adored his loving wife of 45 years. Roy passed away peacefully at the John M. Gray Centre with his family around him on May 22, 2014. Left to mourn his loving wife Priscilla; daughter Rowena (Christopher), and son Jason (Roxanne); grandchildren Jillian, Joshua (Kimberley), Nickolas and Lillie and great-grandchild Chloe; brothers San (Eliza), Edgar (Sheila), Melvin (Clara) and Fred (Elsie); sisters Joyce Cornick and Velma (Morris) Boyd; half-sister Dorcas and sister-in-law Marilyn. He was predeceased by his parents George and Clara, brother Havner, half-sisters Bessie, Helen, Rebecca, Keziah and Vera. Visitation was held at the Anglican Church in Cook’s Harbour from where the funeral service took place at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 26 with Rev. Mark Willkoff officiating. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.
