Orris Edna Mitton (nee Powell)

Age 85, of Halifax, passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary on May 29, 2014.
Orris was born in Moncton, N.B., on April 7, 1929.
Orris was predeceased by her beloved husband, Vernon, of 47 years. Also predeceased by her infant son, Stephen, (P.E.I.) and her sister, Shirley. She was the daughter of the late Ora and Glennie Powell, and stepfather Vincent Hachey, all of New Brunswick.
Orris was a woman of great faith, a kind, generous and hospitable lady. She was a dear friend and encourager to many.
Vernon and Orris opened and operated the Dairy Queen in Charlottetown, P.E.I., in 1960. This business remains in the family today. Eventually they expanded operations and moved to Nova Scotia with the Dairy Queen system. Orris volunteered in her church and community. She taught Explorers and Sunday School. She visited regularly in nursing homes and was a life member of the Women’s Missionary Society.
Orris is survived by her sons, David (Janice) Mitton of Lower Sackville; Brian (Debra) Mitton of Bedford; and daughter, Debra (Craig) Bowman of Stanhope, P.E.I. Orris was Grammie to eight cherished grandchildren: Jennifer, Bradley (Meghan), Rebecca, Corey, Daniel (Jenn), Gary (Krista), Joshua (Heather), Andrew (Jennie) and great-granddaughter, Presley.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Leslie McCurdy, staff of Parkland Estates, Halifax, and the staff of unit 7.4 Halifax Infirmary for their compassionate care.
Arrangements are under the care of the Atlantic Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, on Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. with funeral service to be held at the Bayers Road Baptist Church on Monday June 2, at 11 a.m. Interment will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bayers Road Baptist Church.
