Mansoura 'Monnie' Abbass, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Mary (Corbege) Ferris. She was the beloved wife of Sydney businessman John Abbass, who passed away in 2007. She was also predeceased by her infant daughter, Monica (twin of Veronica) and daughter, Deborah; sisters, Marie Lowe and Veronica Ferris CND and brothers, Joe and Bernard.
Monnie is survived by her children, Veronica (Bill Holman), Peterborough, Frank, Sydney, Andree, Halifax, John (Barb), Bedford, Blaise (Janet), Sydney and Susanne MacDonald (Clyde), Fall River. She is also survived by sisters, Marguerite LeBoeuf (Gilles), Gloria Ferris (John) and Carmel Holgate (Bud), all of Halifax. Monnie was truly loved by her grandchildren, Les and Amy Young, David and Christina Abbass and Catherine and Michelle MacDonald, who all spent many hours hanging out with their “Sity”. Monnie is also survived by a large extended family who was a big part of her life.
Prior to her marriage, Monnie was employed with R.J. Logue car dealership. She devoted most of her life to caring for her husband and children.
Monnie spent many summers at the cottage in Ben Eoin, where all were welcome to enjoy the beach, campfires and great Lebanese food. She and John moved permanently to Ben Eoin, where they lived for many years.
Monnie had many interests in life. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the Cape Breton Bridge Club. She participated in many Progressive Conservative events throughout her lifetime. She served as president of the Lebanese and Syrian Women’s Club and was a very active member of the St. Theresa’s CWL. Monnie and John were very active in the Rotary Club of Sydney, Monnie being named a "Paul Harris Fellow". The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles had great fan support from Monnie and John, who held season tickets for many years.
Monnie will be lovingly remembered for her strong faith, her strong family ties, her sense of humour, and her traditional Lebanese cooking.
The family would like to thank all of the kind people from City Homemakers, the VON and palliative care, who took such good care of our mother.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Monnie’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or a charity of one’s choice.
In lieu of visitation, the family will accept condolences at an open house at Monnie's late residence at 400 Kings Road, Apt. 408, Sydney, on Sunday, June 1 from 2 to 8 p.m. A celebration of Monnie`s life will take place on Monday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating.
