It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother Joseph Vickers, 83, on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at St. Martha Hospital, Antigonish.
Joseph was born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Jacob and Lillian Vickers.
For many years he owned and operated Vickers Variety Store, Moncton. Joseph was an avid harness racing fan and at one time owned harness race horses. During the winter months he was a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, returning to Antigonish in the spring of the year.
Joseph is survived by his wife Margaret Briggs, his four children Kay (Ross) Burgar, London, Ont., Joan Evans and Peggy Anderson, North Sydney, Terry (Marie) Vickers, Saskatchewan, two stepchildren Paul Rose and Pamela Hage, one sister Ellen Enos, California, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and seven step-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his close friends Duffield Hanes, Little Dover, N.S., and Keith Blinkhorn, Amherst.
Joseph was predeceased by his brothers George, Jakie and Sid Vickers, his sisters Sybil and June.
No visitation by request. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines, with Rev Patrick O’Neill officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care.
Arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
