Passed on: May 29th, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend William ‘Bill’ Harvey Maxwell, 78, who passed away on May 29, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Bill was born Feb. 28, 1936, in Sydney, Cape Breton. He was the son of Eliza Pittman-Maxwell and the late William K Maxwell. No matter where his life and career took him, he always loved to return to Cape Breton and his beloved Eaglesrest in Ben Eoin. Bill was a people person — always wanting to serve. He joined the RCAF in 1954 and served as a Warrant Officer, radar specialist in Europe, the US and Canada, including the NATO Arctic base in Baffin Island. After 21 years, he retired from the RCAF to work with the RCMP detachment in Sydney as their telecommunications specialist. Upon final retirement, he split his time as a snowbird in Fort Myers, Fla. and Eaglesrest.
While in France, Bill met the love of his life, his prairie wife, Carol. He loved entertaining and hosting many gatherings for friends and family. In fact, all the old neighbours will never forget when Bill arrived as the “pope’ in North Side East Bay one summer during one such gathering.
While stationed in Moosenee, Ont., he served as mayor of the Air Force Base. Bill was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus and Royal Canadian Legion.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carol (Blevins); daughters, Karen (Dale Martin), Sydney Forks, Kelli, Dartmouth, and son, Kurt, Dartmouth. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Kerri and grandson, Ross and their father, Phillip MacPherson; his sister, Raylene, Winnipeg, Man.; brother, Lorne, Regina, Sask.; aunts, Bidda (Confiant) and Sr. Lillian Gaudet, and his furry grand dogs, Bonnie, Ezmerelda, Nico, and Dawson.
Bill was predeceased by his daughter, Kimberly Irene, his mother-in-law, Dorothy Blevins, and brother, Murray.
There will be no visitation, funeral mass will be celebrated 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 6 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, East Bay, Fr. Frank Abbass, presiding, followed by tea in the church hall.
Family flowers only, in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the IWK or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
