Pauline Forrest

FORREST, PAULINE L. - 1915 - 2014 - Pauline L. Forrest passed away peacefully at her home at Riverside Court, Woodstock, NB on Wednesday, June 4th, 2014, in her 99th year. Born at the home of her maternal grandparents in Dorchester, NB on October 16th 1915, she was the eldest child of Arthur L. and Beulah C. (McAllister) Slipp. Pauline had a distinguished career in education that spanned more than 46 years. Admired by colleagues and several generations of students, she taught in various rural communities throughout Carleton County in her younger days, and in 1949, returned to Broadway School where she taught for 14 years, the last ten of which she also served as principal. She assumed the role of Assistant to the Carleton County Supervisor of Schools in 1964, and later became the Supervisor of Elementary Education for Districts 28 and 29, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. The long-serving matriarch of a large and extended family, Pauline touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be remembered for her wise counsel, loyalty and generous nature. Forever positive in outlook she saw the best in everyone, and was always ready to offer an encouraging word or a hand up to others. She remained young at heart, and was blessed with an enduring zest for life, a great love of adventure and fun, and a keen sense of humour. Pauline was a committed advocate for literacy; she enjoyed good books, encouraged children to read, and was a wonderful storyteller in her own right. She was an amateur local historian who remembered people, names, events and dates with great clarity, and was often called upon for that purpose. A faithful member of the Woodstock United Baptist Church, she was active in both the church and the community at large her entire life. Pauline is survived by her daughter Carole (Laird) McLennan of Fredericton, and her son David (Marlene) of Woodstock; grandchildren Amanda (Aaron) Lenehan of Woodstock, Chrissy Forrest of Fredericton and Randy Jones of Revelstoke, BC; great grandchildren Kyle and Mya Lenehan of Woodstock; Samantha and Jake Jones of Lethbridge, Alberta; her sisters Mary Patterson of Woodstock and Charlotte Young of Brockway; her sister in law Lydia Slipp of Tucson, Arizona, as well as several nieces and nephews to whom she was affectionately known as “Aunt Pop”. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Ruth Fewer and Shirley Anne Smith; her brothers Whitfield, Robert, and David (Audrey) Slipp, and by her husband, Elmer T. Forrest.
Visitation will take place at The Culberson Funeral Home, 188 Connell Street, Woodstock, on Saturday, June 7th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. The funeral service will be held at the Woodstock United Baptist Church at 3 o’clock on Sunday, June 8th, with Reverend Leonard Cousins officiating. Interment will take place at the Kirk Cemetery in Northampton, NB.
