Passed away peacefully at the Welland County General Hospital on June 5, 2014 in his 89th year.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Ellen (neé Nicholson); his son, Paul; his brother James and his parents, Joseph and Annie (neé Jackson), Lewis is survived by his son Warren (Linda), his brothers, Marvin (Rose) and Lloyd (Kay); his sister, Audrey Thompson (Kevin); his grandchildren, Nadine and Shawn Anderson, and step-grandchildren, Nancy Jordan (Mario) and Lesley Deiter (Angus), great-grandchildren, Eric and Erin Saudelli and Emily and Maggie Deiter, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
A Cape Bretoner at heart all his life, Lewis was born and raised in Sydney Mines, N.S, He was a decorated Second World War veteran having served as a radio operator with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Europe; in the Italian campaign in particular. From the late 1950s through to its decommissioning in 1995, Lewis was the resident Lighthouse Keeper at the historic Point Abino Lighthouse in Ridgeway, Ont., a position he was proud to have held.
Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to share memories and celebrate the life of Lewis on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. A private interment will follow at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Walker Family Cancer Center through the Niagara Health System Foundation.
