We regret to announce the peaceful passing of Earle Matthew Kempt of Groves Point at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, on June 6, 2014.
Born in Florence on Jan 10, 1924, Earle was the son of the late Annie (Walsh) & Malcolm Kempt.
Earle worked at #3 colliery in Florence for 16 years. After its closure he took up farming on the Glenn Farm in Groves Point. Earle took great pride in his work on the farm for a number of years before going to work at National Sea Products in North Sydney, retiring from there in 1988. After retirement Earle took great pride in maintaining the lawns and gardens on his Glen Farm. He was a member of Wilson United Church in Florence and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 in Sydney Mines. Earle joined the Cape Breton Highlanders for a short time and then served with the Military Police overseas in WW2. He met his beloved wife Barbara while in the military and was married to her for 69 years.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (Morton); children Ronald (Dianne), Dianne (Norman) MacIntosh, Darlene (Timothy G) Whitty; his grandchildren whom he loved so much Blair (Jeany) Whitty; Brian (Jennifer) Whitty; Jason Kempt; Tracie MacIntosh-Klisht (Nick); Tara MacIntosh; great-grandchildren Christopher, Jenna, Breton and Julia Whitty; brothers Sandy, Elmer (Linda); sisters Marj (Tom) Miller, and Cavelle Johnston; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews
Beside his parents Earle was predeceased by brothers Elderick, Charles, Jack, Lindsay and Tony; sisters Bella, Philomena, Edna, and Josie.
As per Earl’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A celebration of Earle’s life will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Chapel, 10 Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating . Burial will be held in Lake Side Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Wilson United Church, Florence or to the VON.
Earle will forever be know by family and friends alike, as a kind and gentle man who enjoyed a simple life. He was loved by all who knew him.
