With saddened hearts, we the family announce the passing of George Reginald Skanes, Sr. on June 9, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital, with loving family at his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Edward and Anne Skanes.
He was employed at the Sydney Steel Rail Finishing Mill for 42 years.
Reg loved to travel and in his early years was active with the scouting movement taking a trip to Norway for the World Jamboree in 1975. Upon retirement he volunteered with the Citizens Service League delivering Meals on Wheels for 10 years. He loved to spend time with family camping and hunting.
Reg is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beatrice Viola (Slade); daughters, Mae (George) deBellefeuille, Darlene Skanes; sons, Reg Jr. (Elinor Leah) Skanes, Fred (Geraldine) Skanes and close friend, Terry (Linda) Best; eight grandchildren, Peter, Kelly, Christopher, Beth Anne, Tracy, Michael, Kathleen, Brian and five great-grandchildren, Violet, Lilly, Maddison, Rachael and Nathan. Also survived by sister, Gladys, Ontario; brother, John, Alberta and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by five sisters and three brothers.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014, at 11 a.m., St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.
