Kenneth Heming Sanford, Entomologist, passed away on 11 June 2014, aged 87 years in Kentville. Born in Berwick Nova Scotia on 21 September 1926, he was the son of the late Philip L. and Frances E. (Heming) Sanford. He was predeceased by son Paul William and his sister Eleanora. After completing high school at Kings County Academy in Kentville, Ken attended Acadia University to take engineering. After two years he realized this was not going to be his lifework and moved on to MacDonald College and completed his B.Sc. (Horticulture), then later received his MSc in Entomology from McGill University. Ken began his career at the Kentville Research Station in 1949 as a summer student, starting full time in 1951. During the following 37 years he and a team of colleagues developed many projects which involved testing the effect of pesticides on both predators and parasites. The results of those studies, and the many that followed were used as the foundation to develop novel programs which would suppress specific pests without eliminating beneficial species, thus establishing the fundamental framework for today’s Integrated Pest Management programs widely used in the apple industry. While doing research in Kentville, Ken soon became the acknowledged specialist on pesticides and often acted as the liaison with industry to develop new compounds with selective properties for orchard insect and mite control. He produced 25 academic publications and over 250 pesticide-related reports particularly relevant to the apple industry. He was fundamental in the implementation of Apple Grower consultations, allowing growers access to provincial extension staff. When he decided to retire from research in 1987 he was a natural choice for his next career as Nova Scotia Sales Representative for NM Bartlett Inc. a nationwide crop protection distribution company where he began in 1988 until present day. True retirement was never his plan. Ken purchased the family farm in 1967 and began the lifelong transformation that became the progressive orchard that exists now as Ravenswood Farms Ltd. He was extremely active in the apple industry, having been a Director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association and a member of several committees including the N.S. Tree Fruit Research Committee. He was a long-time member of Scotian Gold Cooperative where he served on the Board of Directors for 21 years (1989-2010). His peers recognized him through an honorary membership in the NSFGA in 1991 and the Golden Apple award in 1993 for service to the industry. Ken was most happy when he was outdoors. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, often with his fellow researchers at their beloved camp in Caledonia. He also enjoyed sailing his National One-Design on Aylesford Lake where he had been both Vice Commodore and building chairman for the Aylesford Lake Yacht Club for many years. He taught his children to sail and continued to enjoy the weekend races through them. He enjoyed both the serenity and camaraderie provided by the family cottage on Aylesford Lake for over 80 years, continuing with near daily visits by Ford Explorer until only two weeks before his passing. Ken is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Pauline Rae (Buddell), daughters Pamela Lee (Kevin Bourke) of Halifax, Dale Frances (David Fraser) of Glenmont, Lynda Anne (Stephen McDow) of Aylesford Lake and son Peter Kenneth (Mary) of Coldbrook. Dad taught his family many things through the way he lived, and he truly had a purposeful life all his 87 years. Through him we learned commitment to family, an incredible work ethic, to laugh and perseverance. Thank you Dad, you will be missed! The Sanford family wishes to thank everyone who cared for Ken, in particular Dr. Ben Heisler who showed Ken many years of respect during difficult times. Visitation was held 7-9pm Monday, 16 June 2014 at White Family Funeral Home in Kentville, with a celebration of Ken’s life and reception at the same location on Tuesday, 17 June 2014 at 1 PM. Private family interment at a later date. Family flowers only by request. Donations may be made in Ken’s memory to the Valley Hospice Foundation or the VON Annapolis Valley. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line condolences or inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
