George McKay, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in the Veteran’s Wing of the Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines on June 14, 2014.
Born in Lingan, Cape Breton on July 31, 1925, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary Ellen (Mahon) McKay and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
George was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Estelle (Molly) Martin, his older brothers, John and Andrew, his brother-in-law Charles Martin and sister-in-law, Rita (Mahon) McKay.
He is survived by his loving wife, Verna (MacLeod); his children, John (Kathleen Roach), Anne (Tommy Hulme) and Ellen (Bill Frank); grandchildren, Michael, Jenna and Thomas; step-grandchildren, Jason, Michael, Sarah and Christina; four great-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Phyllis Marcil, Yvonne McKay and Patricia Martin.
He was a naval veteran of the Second World War and was a strong supporter and proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Westside Branch in Westmount), where he received the Meritorious Service Award in 2010.
George graduated from St. FX University with a BBA and B. Ed. He was actively involved in the Glace Bay and Sydney business communities (including Riverside Cleaners) and ended his working career teaching business and marketing courses at the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology (now Cape Breton University). Throughout his adult life, he was very involved in many community and charitable organizations, including Holy Rosary Church in Westmount, the founding of St. James Parish in Gardiner Mines, local school boards, the United Way, Meals on Wheels, the Lingan Golf Club and the Sydney Curling Club.
George was a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife and children. He also took great pleasure in playing golf and in curling, and especially enjoyed his Scotland golf trip including playing at the Old Course in St. Andrew’s on the occasion of his 75th birthday. In his retirement years, he and Verna enjoyed travelling and particularly enjoyed their winter home in Florida.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 18 at 11 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount. Rev. Doug Murphy will officiate. Interment in parish cemetery.
A reception will follow at the Westside Canadian Legion on Midgley Drive, Westmount. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Northside / Harbour View Hospital Foundation.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the very caring staff and to Dr. Andrew Wawer at Harbour View who looked after George for the last 21 months and to Dr. Glen Worth and his staff. In addition, the family acknowledges with heartfelt gratitude the contribution of Alexis Little, a dear and loving friend of both George and the family, who helped George with song, dance and laughter in these last days. We are forever grateful to all.
