Horace Rindress MacKenzie

We the family are saddened to announce the passing of Horace Rindress MacKenzie a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, on June 14, 2014, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Rindress was born in Ross Ferry on April 4, 1916, the son of the late J. Fraser and Margaret (Matheson) MacKenzie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Gavinna (MacAulay) MacKenzie and daughters, Eileen (late Joseph) MacDonald, Chelmsford, Mass., Joyce (late Ted) Trenholm, Doreen (Wayne) Jardine, Deborah Strickland, Gwendolyn (Joseph) MacLean, all of Boularderie, Leona (Patrick) Penney, Fletchers Lake, N.S.; daughter-in-law, Elma MacKenzie; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Eldridge (Bette) MacAulay; sisters-in-law, Margaret MacKenzie, Agnes MacAulay, Teresa MacAulay and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his only son Raymond in 2006.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Alexander 'Sandy' (Nellie), Hector (Arabel), Christopher (Anna), Fraser (Della), Raymond and sisters, Mary (Everett) Crowdis and Ruth (Russell) MacFarlane, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Malcolm J. and Gavinna MacAulay, sister-in-law, Josie MacAulay and brother-in-law, John Willie MacAulay.
Rindress retired from the Department of Highways in 1981. He was a founding member of the Big Bras d’Or Volunteer Fire Dept. He enjoyed gardening and going for Sunday drives. His family was his greatest joy.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick for his years of care, also Dr. Carlyle Chow and the staff of Victoria County Memorial Hospital for the comfort and exceptional care provided to him over the past two weeks.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place at Black Rock Cemetery.
