Mary Alice Foster, age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 11, 2014 at the Kyle Health Centre, Kyle SK. Mary was born November 18, 1923 on the farm 18 miles North of Stoughton SK to Noreen ( Kemp) and Wilfred Taylor who farmed in the Handsworth area. She was the only child. Sadly her birth mother Noreen passed away before Mary was 2 years old. Wilfred married again to Vera (McLung) Mary often said her only playmates on the farm were the dog and cats. She loved the young horses and cattle. One of her chores was to walk to bring the cows in from the pasture for milking. She would laugh and say they were always at the far end of it.
Mary was educated in the Hazelmere country school adjacent to the Taylor farm yard. She received her grade 12 education in Stoughton. Mary met the love of her life John Foster at Stoughton High School. She went to Normal School in Regina to become a teacher. She taught school at Froude SK.
They were married at the Taylor farm on September 8, 1943. John went overseas to serve in the Air force in the Second World War, Mary continued teaching.
John returned home to Stoughton October 31, 1944. Mary stopped teaching to raise a family in their Stoughton home. Twin sons Barry and Bruce were born July 20, 1945. A daughter Dianne was born July 28, 1946 but did not survive birth.
The family moved to Roseray Sk. 1953 - 1973. Mary was a home maker and John was a grain buyer for Pioneer Grain. The boys graduated from school leaving home in 1963.
Mary enjoyed quilting, sewing, playing cards, curling, and badminton. She was an active member of the U.C.W. and Legion Women’s Auxiliary.
Mary and John moved to Canal Flats BC. 1973- 2003. Mary continued her role as a home maker and John was employed in a lumber mill. Mary also worked part time in the post office and Fairmont resort.
Mary enjoyed camping with the Good Sam’s Club. She was a member of the Canal Flats Seniors Club. She enjoyed growing geranium flowers, gardening, oil painting and lawn bowling. In the 1990's they did some traveling with trips to Canada’s east coast provinces and overseas to the British Isles.
Mary and John moved to Cranbrook BC. 2000-2003 They lived at the Joseph Creek retirement home.
Mary enjoyed not having to make meals all the time. She felt she had finally achieved retirement.
Mary and John moved to Kyle SK. 2003- 2014 They enjoyed living together in the South view Apartments until John’s passing September 16, 2004 . Mary continued to live in the apartment until Sept 5, 2013 when she moved into the Kyle Health Centre.
Mary enjoyed visiting with other residents of the South view Apartments and the Kyle Health Centre sharing in daily coffee breaks. She enjoyed, knitting, family visits and the occasional trips to the Hilltop Café for soft ice cream.
Mary is survived by two sons Barry (Marlene Soden) and Bruce (Shirley Tymchuk); grandchildren; Tanya (Russell Dawson), Theresa (Chris Fisher) Cheryl, Wade, Michael (Lisamarie LaCroix) and Lisa (Frank Ruiz); great grandchildren, Shealyn, Owen, Luke, Cole, Michaela, Nicholas, and Landon.
She was predeceased by one infant daughter Dianne, her parents Noreen (Kemp), Wilfred Taylor, Stepmother Vera (McLung), and husband John.
Mary will be missed by her family and friends, for her great humor, patient understanding and gentle care given to all.
Mary wanted special mention made of her deep appreciation of the excellent care given to her by the administration, medical staff, nursing staff, and support personnel of the Kyle Health Centre. In her memory, friends may make a donation to Kyle Health Centre or a charity of choice.
The grave side service and interment of her ashes will take place at Stoughton Cemetery, Stoughton SK at a later date in June 2014.
