Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: June 19th, 2014

PICTOU LANDING – Margaret passed peacefully into the hands of our Lord on June 19, 2014 at her home in Glen Haven Manor with family by her side.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Margaret did not want for much in this life. She preferred the simple things which brought her joy and happiness. She was always so proud of her children she raised in Pictou Landing including Linda (Fred) Sangster, Margie (Philip) MacDonald, Bobby (Nancy) Roper, Jimmy (Joni) Roper, Dorothy (Pat) Doyle, Diane (Dave Bowen) as well as step-daughter Blanche (Ken) Vincent and step-son, Ron (Linda) Roper and their families. Very important to Nanny are her family grandchildren: Jeff, Jennifer and Jamie Sangster, Andrew, Bradley and Sarah MacDonald, Bobby, Angie, Grant, Rita, Laura and Michael Roper, Ric and Robyn Doyle, as well as 13 great-grandchildren and sister Violet.
She was predeceased by her husband, Tom, and her two brothers, Rob and Fred Campbell, her parents Clarence and Viola Campbell, and her step-son, Tommy.
Margaret or Marg but most often referred to as “Nanny” was the center of the family and made the most of all family occasions. In fact, she just celebrated one of her own when she welcomed Spring with an Open House at her home in Glen Haven Manor where she had made so many wonderful friends among the other residents and the staff.
Margaret’s greatest legacy is her dedication and contribution to Bethel Presbyterian Church in Pictou Landing, the Bethel Guild, the Northumberland Quilt Guild, the AMS Society and numerous other groups she attended. During the time of the Pictou Landing School she was very much involved in the Home and School organization with card parties and organizing the annual round of cod liver oil pills.
Margaret was also proud of her younger years on the farm in Saltsprings and her years in the Military where she served with the CWAC (Canadian Women’s Army Corps). She was a hard working Mom and a strong spirited wife who looked after her husband Tom until his death in 1993. Margaret loved to socialize and spend time with friends whom she considered her greatest treasures. She played many card games and was suspected of always having an ace up her sleeve. She loved her visits from Ken and Blanche and Ronnie as well as their families. She wrote faithfully to her sister Violet in Manitoba. Margaret was well known for her quilting talent and has quilts that have travelled far and wide. She sewed each one of them by hand with love and pride and they adorn the homes of all her children and grandchildren. She loved to bake for others and was especially known for her ginger snaps by some of her neighbours. One of her passions was the work of the SPCA and she visited whenever she could to chat and make donations. She was also passionate about the Food Bank and her birthday gifts were always donations to the Pictou County Food Bank. She was a strong supporter of the Christmas Daddies program and the IWK telethon and eagerly looked forward to these programs. Gifts at Christmas also included education or animal gifts through World Vision.
Margaret (Nanny) will be sadly missed here with us but we are assured of her reward in Heaven and know that her pain and suffering will end. She was not one to complain and never wanted to bother anyone. However, her strong presence always filled the room with love and support. She has been our best friend for our whole lives and will remain in our hearts forever.
Her remains are resting at the R.H. Porter’s Funeral Home in New Glasgow with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 22. Funeral will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Pictou Landing at 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, with Rev. Pat Rose officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Pictou Landing following the service. Family will meet with friends at a reception at Bethel Church following burial.
Donations in her memory may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, S.P.C.A. or Pictou County Food Bank.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Mom’s second family at Glen Haven Manor who provided such loving care and friendship for the past three years.
