Former Truro Police Chief Passes Away
MURRAY, Alonzo Lester “Lonnie” – 80, Truro, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 21, 2014, at Vimy Court Shannex. Born September 1, 1933, in Middleboro, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late Lester and Blanche (Henderson) Murray. Lonnie served with the Truro Police Department for 40 years, from 1956 – 1996, and served the last 22 years as Chief of Police. He was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church and was past president of NS Chiefs of Police Association, Atlantic Chiefs of Police, Truro Kiwanis Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cobequid Neighbourhood Work Activity Program, Fundy Trail Snowmobile and Recreation Club and was Chairman of the Board of Managers at St. James Presbyterian Church and Hart Lake Cottage Owners Association. He loved the outdoors and loved to hunt, fish and snowmobile. Lonnie is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Anne Claire (Lockhart); children, Susan (Aubrey) Ryan, Tatamagouche; Belinda (Blaine) Geddes, Truro; Gregory (Cathy), Hart Lake; Joanne Newell, Toronto; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sisters, Murial Hyson, Truro; Verna (Darrell) McNutt, Wallace Station; Joyce Murray, Pugwash; brother, Laurie (Eva), Enfield; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Moore. Special thanks to Dr. Neil Bower and staff at Vimy Court Shannex for their compassionate care. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Lonnie’s family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m., Monday, June 23, 2014. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2014, in St. James Presbyterian Church, 725 Prince Street, Truro, Reverend Don Muise officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lonnie’s memory to St. James Presbyterian Church or Parkinson Society, Maritime Region are welcomed.
