It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael John Dermody on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Conception Bay, NL, he was the son of the late Michael and Stella (Brophy) Dermody, of Whitney Pier.
Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman, with a great love of the outdoors. He spent many hours fishing at Grand Lake and South Bar Wharf. In 2000, Mike retired from Sydney Steel after 29 years of service. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for being a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law and uncle.
Mike leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 49 years, Sheila (Lesnick) and their children, Lorne (Martha), Wayne (Adrienne), Shelley (Cheetah), Donna and Stephen (Rhonda). He is also survived by his daughter, Cathy Campbell (Robert). Poppy will be missed by his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Mike is also survived by his brother, John; sister, Sheila; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Alice, Kay, Patricia and Margarite and brothers, Patrick and Thomas.
As per Mike's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Thursday, June 26 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Reception to follow at the Grand Lake Road Fire Hall.
The family would like to thank all of Mike’s doctors, palliative care staff and the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. A special heartfelt thank you to the nurses in the Renal Dialysis Centre (Mike’s Angels) for all their care over the past 3 1/2 years.
Donations in memory of Mike may be made to the CBDHA Renal Dialysis Unit.
